Michigan State Capitol Debuts New History Websites
This February, our friends at the Michigan State Capitol have debuted a series of new websites on a variety of historical topics tied to the historic building. Below are links and further information on the various collections and exhibit websites now available for viewing. These efforts highlight the great importance that the State Capitol has on local history and the great history that the Capitol holds within its walls.
www.capitol.michigan.gov — The general Capitol website has been updated and includes a plethora of information on Michigan’s three Capitol Buildings, how Lansing became the capital, and details on how to tour this beloved National Historic Landmark.
Art Collection — A new website showcases the world-class art collection at the Michigan State Capitol, which now allows visitors to learn in-depth history of and take a detailed look at each of the Capitol’s 50+ portrait paintings online.
Save the Flags — More than 30 years ago a nonprofit organization was launched to begin the important work of preserving and conserving Michigan’s historic battle flags. Operated by Capitol staff since its start, the project’s new website gives visitors the chance to explore the history of regimental flags, take a detailed photographic tour of each flag, and learn more about how to contribute to the project.
Exhibits — With its Heritage Hall welcome center and fulltime educational staff, the Capitol is able to develop and mount eye-catching exhibits. The newest exhibits are titled “Built to Endure” and “Art Adorns the Paths of Life.” The latter details the decorative arts history of the building, with special attention paid to the Detroit firm that had the decorative arts contract - the William Wright Co. - and the man who led the project - Christian Weidemann of Detroit. This new site is a web-based supplement to “Art Adorns the Paths of Life,” which you should explore both in person and online.
Michigan State Capitol Collection — While not brand new, this website is worth promoting again for its great content. The State Capitol is a collecting institution and has begun the process of digitizing and cataloging its collections of Capitol-related materials, from documents to photos, architectural salvage to political buttons, the Capitol collects it and shares it in this easily digestible and user-friendly site.
